It’s Time to Love Your Legs Again!
Do you remember the days of being carefree and in love? At Morrison Vein, we want you to rekindle that feeling with a new adoration…for your legs!
Let the month of love inspire you to address your spider or varicose veins. Instead of hiding and dealing with the discomforts, take the steps necessary to improve your vein health. By doing so, you can get back to being that carefree you. Visit us at our Scottsdale office or our new Tempe location to start your journey to feeling better. We offer a comfortable home-like setting, and believe in holding our patient's hands through the process.
Along with education, we provide innovative procedures that help improve damaged veins. The combination of healthy vein practices and treatments can help your legs feel good on the inside, while looking great on the outside.
Another way to spread your love this Valentine's Day month is by joining our vFree (vein disease free) campaign. It is our mission at Morrison Vein to increase awareness about the dangers of vein disease. Often people will attribute their varicose veins to being a cosmetic flaw, when really they are an indicator of this disorder. For this reason, it is imperative to have your veins screened so that action can be taken if necessary. Are you ready to be vFree? Grab your loved ones and your sweetheart (men get vein disease too!) and take a tour of our new Tempe location and receive a complimentary vFree checkup (appointment required). Afterwards, please send us a picture of yourself making the vFree hand sign- showing support of our campaign.
It's time to dance again…go to the beach again…love your legs again! Take back control of your life this February at Morrison Vein.
Fab over 40: 7 tips for gorgeous legs
Healthy legs can help us look and feel younger even as we get older. Gorgeous legs start with a strong circulatory system, which is key to keeping varicose veins and other forms of vein disease at bay. Lifestyle choices have a say in the matter as well. Consider these exercise and diet tips to keep your legs looking great, even after 40.
The calf is key...
Flexing your calf muscle gets the blood moving up your leg and towards your heart. Those with poor circulation often have weak valves in their veins which allows the blood to pool in ankle areas instead of moving up the leg as it should, causing varicose and spider veins.
Getting up on your toes will often do the trick. A brisk walk or jog also activates the calf muscle. If you sit during most of the workday, take breaks that involve walking or stretching and getting up on those toes as much as possible. Even while sitting, engage your calf muscle by moving your foot up and down whenever possible.
"Too often, people think exercises need to be vigorous and painful. There are many simple stretches that can help you get your blood flowing in your legs right now," said Terri Morrison, a sclerotherapy nurse and co-founder with her husband, Nick Morrison, MD of Morrison Vein Institute in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Get to know Rutin…
Rutin is part of a large family of flavanoids, which are great for circulation. Found abundantly in berries, apples and grapes, research studies have pegged rutin to be a beneficial anti-clotting agent. Not to mention, adding these fruits to your diet sounds a lot better than the words: broccoli and kale.
Exercise is essential to beautiful legs and a healthy venous system. But a high-impact exercise like running can be hard on the joints, even though it is activating the calf muscle. Too much running, however, may eventually place you on the injured list.
Mix in biking, walking and elliptical trainer work to get the exercise boost you need without the pain. And never underestimate the power of a simple, brisk walk. Try 30 minutes daily and add extra steps throughout the day by parking your car farther from an entrance and taking the stairs when possible.
Compress and look great too…
Compression hosiery helps blood move up the leg toward the heart. While for years compression hose could only be described as matronly, designers have now woven it into fashion to make for some stylish looks – allowing your legs to look and feel great at the same time.
"Compression hosiery is such a critical piece of the vein health puzzle," Terri Morrison explained. "Even after surgery, the doctor will require compression hose to be worn. But it's great to know you can look stylish, too."
Take your vitamin C…
Combine vitamin C with flavanoids like rutin and you have a potent combination that fights free-radical damage to vein walls. Oranges and grapefruits offer the highest levels of vitamin C, but some experts suggest supplementing between 500 and 1,000 milligrams.
Even modest weight loss of five to 10 pounds can bring immense benefits to your heart and blood pressure. You legs will thank you too. Added weight puts pressure on the abdomen, making it difficult for blood to flow to the vena cava and up to the heart. This problem could lay the groundwork for troubled, unsightly veins.
Bad veins? There are answers…
If you're already battling varicose veins, there's great news! There are several virtually painless and extremely effective options. Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVTA) is a laser procedure that requires minimal downtime for patients and little to no scarring.Sclerotherapy is another option that may bring minimal scarring, little downtime and no anesthesia is required.
"Painful vein stripping is a thing of the past," said Morrison. "The advancements that have been made allow patients to get a new lease on life when it comes to their veins, and they can be back to their routines quicker than ever."
